Urn Selection

Urn Size

When choosing Human Urns or Pet Urns, as a general rule you'll need wooden cremation urns with at least one cubic inch of volume for every pound of body weight prior to cremation. For example, if the deceased had a healthy weight of 150 pounds before cremation, you will need an Urn Volume that is at least 150 cubic inches or larger.

Before making your Cremation Urn Selection, it’s important to consider the final resting place for your loved one’s cremains and required interior volume.

Urn for Home or a Columbarium Niche

  • The style of the urn can become more important if you will have the urn on display at home. The dimensions of the urn are important if the urn will be placed in a columbarium niche.

Urn for Burial

  • If you plan to have a memorial and burial service, then you have a wide selection of cremation urns. Almost any urn can be placed in an urn vault and then buried.

Using a Niche

  • The height and width dimensions of the urn are important considerations when using a niche. Be sure to call the columbarium manager before your purchase to find out the niche size and any columbarium restrictions before choosing your urn. Some columbarium’s have family niches with room for larger urns or multiple urns.

Sharing the Cremains

  • Many times families will elect to share portions of the cremains with each other. This can be accomplished by purchasing multiple small urns that collectively have the required volume. Keepsake Urns and      Remembrance Urns are a good choice to meet this need.
